An active-duty U.S. Air Force major just put his career, his pension, and his freedom on the line to demand Trump’s impeachment, and Capitol Police arrested him for it.
Maj. Jason Watson, a logistics readiness officer who enlisted in 2005, stood on the Capitol steps Wednesday after a press conference held by the Removal Coalition and refused to stop calling for Trump’s removal. When Rep. Al Green left the area, officers told Watson to end his demonstration or face arrest. He kept going. They took him away in handcuffs.
Watson did not mince words about why he was there. He said that for the past 18 months, the highest levels of the executive branch have been allowed to violate the Constitution with impunity, and he accused Trump of committing innumerable impeachable offenses.
He laid out the case piece by piece. Trump violated the War Powers Act by ordering military strikes on Iran and Venezuela without congressional approval, strikes Watson says killed 13 service members and injured hundreds more. Trump handed Elon Musk, an unelected mega donor, sweeping power to gut federal agencies and access government databases. Trump sponsored violence against Americans exercising their First Amendment rights, denied due process to deported immigrants, traded pardons for donations, and weaponized the Justice Department against his critics.
Watson made clear he is not a Democrat and knows almost nothing about Rep. Green’s policy positions. He simply called Green the only member of Congress with the courage and conviction to force an impeachment vote, and said that if Congress followed his example, the entire Trump administration could be removed.
Jessica Denson, founder of the Removal Coalition, said Watson is risking not just his military career but potential prosecution to stand by the oath he swore. She called it the example of sacrifice that members of Congress need to see and confront.
A man who spent two decades serving this country decided his oath to the Constitution mattered more than his own future. Congress should be asking itself why an Air Force major has more courage than 237 of its members.
