A Turkish Air Force F-16 fighter jet crashed during a training flight in northwestern Türkiye’s Yalova province on Wednesday after reportedly experiencing a malfunction, according to the Turkish Defense Ministry.
The pilot successfully ejected from the aircraft before the crash and survived, officials confirmed, averting what could have been a far more serious tragedy.
“One of our Air Force’s F-16 aircraft crashed in Yalova during a training flight; the pilot ejected and survived,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.
The ministry added that the exact cause of the crash remains unknown and will be established through a detailed investigation.
Emergency Response Quickly Underway
The accident occurred during a training operation at Yalova Airfield Command. Initial reports placed the crash near the 18th Main Jet Base in the Taşköprü area of Çiftlikköy district.
Emergency personnel were dispatched to the area shortly after the aircraft went down. Firefighters, medical teams and security personnel responded to the scene as authorities secured the area and began their initial assessment.
According to preliminary information, the pilot ejected from the F-16 and descended by parachute before being located by emergency responders.
The pilot was subsequently taken to Yalova Training and Research Hospital for medical evaluation and treatment. Officials confirmed that the pilot survived, although further details about the pilot’s condition were not immediately released.
Military Investigation Launched
Authorities have begun a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Officials have indicated that a malfunction may have preceded the accident, but investigators are expected to examine the aircraft’s mechanical systems, flight data and other evidence before determining an official cause.
The investigation will also seek to establish whether the pilot reported any problems before the crash and how the aircraft responded to the suspected malfunction.

The F-16 was reportedly assigned to the Ceylan Squadron at the 1st Main Jet Base in Eskişehir.
